Kirsten McKenzie Trying to balance my female authors with my male authors this year. And trying to ensure I read a wide selection of books from Kiwi authors.

message 2: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten McKenzie Just about to start reading The Wish Child by Catherine Chidgey . The reviews sound amazing. It's a book I already own. By a female Kiwi author. I promised myself I would read an even split of 50:50 female and male authors, and 50:50 Kiwi and overseas authors. So this book helps me stay on target.

Kirsten McKenzie 10 books - 4 by NZ authors, and 6 by overseas authors. 4 by female authors and 6 by male authors. I'm doing okay on trying to ensure an even balance between my reads.

message 4: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten McKenzie 12 books - 5 by NZ authors, and 7 by overseas authors. 5 by female authors and 7 by male authors. Still on track to read an even balance between New Zealand/overseas authors, and male/female authors.

Kirsten McKenzie Time to read another book by a Kiwi author, to keep to my goal of reading 50% by NZ authors.

message 6: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten McKenzie 8/16 books by female authors now. Right on track!

6/16 books by New Zealand authors. Needs to be 50%. So another book by a Kiwi author must be next on my list! Just as well I have The Secrets of Strangers next to my bed waiting for me.

Kirsten McKenzie 9/17 books by female authors now. Right on track!

7/17 books by New Zealand authors. Needs to be 50%. So another book by a Kiwi author must be next on my list.

I have One Single Thing by Tina Clough waiting. The second book in the series. Loved the first one - The Chinese Proverb.

Kirsten McKenzie 10/18 books by females authors.

7/18 books by New Zealand authors. Needs work! Although I have started Tina Cough's book 'One Single Thing' (I got sidetracked by Suzanne Collins new Hunger Games book!).

Kirsten McKenzie With everything that has been happening since the murder of George Floyd in America, I've struggled to know how to respond. I can share posts on Instagram, and on Twitter, and on Facebook, and call out racism where I see it. But when I took a deeper look at myself, even my reading list is overwhelmingly European-centric, with almost no diverse voices. It's all very well me trying to balance my reading between genders, and ensuring that I read more Kiwi authors. But what about diverse voices? Where is my commitment to expand my own knowledge of the challenges faced by other people? Of their lives and history? Of the 18 books I've read this year, only one was by a non European author - Call Me Evie by J.P. Pomare by JP Pomare (of Ngā Puhi). I can do better. I will do better.

message 10: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten McKenzie 29 books so far:

13 books by female authors.
9 books by Kiwi authors

No really doing so well with hitting my targets of 50% of books read by female authors, and 50% of books read by Kiwi authors. Still, there are three months left in this year!
