I was told under no uncertain terms how much I would hate this story, and how shallow the characters were. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. I love this story, and I love almost all the characters with equal passion.

Eclipse is heavy with conflicts, most of them escalating from the open threads of the previous books. In reading this story, I could identify with almost everyone, save for Rosalie and Alice. With Alice, I love her when she's behaving, but I've never cared for her methods of manipulation. Here she's on her catty worst behavior, exploiting her "cuteness" over and over to be cloyingly protective of Bella for no valid reason.

Rosalie is just a whiny bitch. Here, though, I admit the problem is personal. When Rosalie gets a chance to explain why she's a bitch it basically comes out, "Boohoo, I’ll never have kids, but I have a fantastic life otherwise. You should want to live and have kids, Bella, because that's all that matters in life." Well, as a sterile woman who could never have kids, I fail to identify with Rosalie’s point of view, and I take her whiny, bratty behavior far more personally than I should.

But aside from them, for the first time in the series, I can see most everyone's motivations clearly, and even if I know these opposing desires can only end in hurt feelings, I also understand why everyone is behaving so stubbornly. The stakes at this point in the story are very high, and both Edward and Jacob become desperate to win Bella's heart. Both play dirty, and both end up hurting themselves just as often as they hurt Bella.

Bella's no innocent Swan, pun intended, and while I was delighted to see her stand up to all three of the men in her life (Charlie, Jacob, and FINALLY, Edward) I also at times was groaning, "Oh, Bella" for some of the petty things she did. But then again, she was no less petty than her brash best friend, and no less petty than her boyfriend. So for me their behavior kind of balances everything out. Nobody wins a top jerk award because I can even understand why they're being jerks. (Except Rosalie, cause she's a...right, I'll move on)

Under this romantic conflict, the signs of a major fight are brewing. In Seattle, people are dropping like flies, and everyone in Forks seems to know it's a vampire doing the killing. But putting together why and how takes a while, and by the time any answers can be found, both the vegetarian vampires and the werewolves find themselves facing a huge army of newborn vampires.

This is the first book in the series where I had the impression of reading something from Anne Rice. Not so much for the style of the prose, but for the literary method used to relay stories about the past while still moving the story in the present toward the main conflicts. When this style is used right, I love it, which is why I've read most of Rice's books. I feel like Meyer has also used the method just as effectively to deliver the histories of the werewolves and the vampires. I never felt like these flashbacks were history lessons, and I was fascinated by every little detail added.

And, every time I put down the book, I found myself thinking of the characters. And not just Bella and Edward. I worried over problems faced by Jasper, Jacob, and even Charlie. Yes, CHARLIE. I didn't like him in the first two books and saw him as a neglectful father. I still feel that way, but at least now I can understand why. Further, I now understand that many of Bella's quirks are all inherited from her dad. The apple really didn't fall far from the tree.

This book started off good and quickly rose to great. There was even a point when my panties got damp because Edward used three perfect words..."you were right." (Oh, I think they’re damp again...yep, damp again.)

I don't toss five stars around lightly, but any book that makes me think this much over fictional people for hours after I’ve closed the cover deserves the highest score. I give Eclipse 5 stars and would recommend it heartily to fans of YA, dark fantasy, and paranormal romance. ...more "
