Donna Perpetua is an Orthodox Christian writer who lives in Michigan with her husband and her mom, who recently joined them. She edited and wrote the introduction and supplementary materials for the first volume of the series Ancient Examples: Writings of the Early Christians for Today, St. Justin Martyr and St. Perpetua.

Donna Perpetua enjoys making pilgrimages to Orthodox monasteries in America. She was pleased to discover an icon of her name Saint at the Holy Dormition of the Mother of God Orthodox Monastery in Rives Junction, Michigan. She recently began studying and learning how to write icons, completing her first icon in August (depicting the Seraph who touched the Prophet Isaiah's lips with the coal from the altar; see Isaiah 6).

But, although I read many of his works when I was young (even writing my senior English thesis about aspects of his novel Crime and Punishment), I think I would like to read his novels first. Well, at least read or re-read some of them. Dostoevsky was rather prolific, so I probably won't read them all before turning to these other two books about him and the Orthodox Saint who evidently inspired him. I think it will be interesting to see what I think of his novels as an adult--and from a more spiritual perspective, a perspective I did not have when I was so young.(less)

I tend to look at such periods as times when God is looking for me to be using my time elsewhere. I also look at times that are especially productive as moments when the Holy Spirit is really using me for that purpose at that time. In both cases, I try to go with that flow and turn it to best use, as I am inspired to do.

When looked at this way, a Christian perspective on how God wants to work in me and through me, writer's block is not such a negative period of time. Instead, writer's block is an opportunity to focus and pray about what I am supposed to be doing, and then to go and do that.

Having said that, neither is quite so easy. Sometimes God is not very direct. And sometimes, even when it seems clear, one does not always want to submit to His will. But that is part of the journey of getting closer to God: learning and doing His will and not your own.(less)

The Nature of Prayer

I found this on a blog of a Christian Greeting Card shop, illumination greetings, and thought I would pass it on:

Prayer is not a natural property of fallen man. This is why we have a commandment to pray. We are commanded by God to do, not natural but supernatural things. We do not have a commandment to sleep, to drink, to eat, because these are natural activities, but we do have a commandment t

“Throughout this project I have been filled with grace in many ways. Indeed, I can feel God’s Providential hand at work in my life, often quite powerfully. And I have been the beneficiary of what I can only describe as miracles. Some pertain to this work. I would like to share a few of them with you because from the start I felt I was drawn to engage in this project through the call of the Holy Spirit and these events only confirm that this project was blessed from the start. I share with you not to boast, but so you may see that God often actually works powerfully in one’s life, even in seemingly little things, for it is always to His greater glory. This is why we should share such stories with each other. For if we choose to retain secretly what He has given us, it does not work for His greater glory, but for our own destruction.”
Donna Perpetua, Ancient Examples: St. Justin Martyr and St. Perpetua

“And those of us who are not directly caught up in any persecution for our Christian faith must pray for those who suffer such onslaughts. But even more importantly, we must pray for those who persecute us or our fellow Christians. It is what Jesus Christ calls us to do. And, as Saint Perpetua reported hearing during her last vision, "Do not be afraid, I am here with you, and I am laboring with you.”
Donna Perpetua, Ancient Examples: St. Justin Martyr and St. Perpetua

“Stand fast in the faith, and love one another, all of you, and be not offended at my sufferings.

(Last words of Saint Perpetua, as testified to by the eyewitness to her martyrdom, as preserved by Tertullian in The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity.)”
St. Perpetua

“Neither can I call myself anything else than what I am, a Christian.

(Saint Perpetua, as preserved by Tertullian in The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicity.)”
St. Perpetua

“I can wish no better thing for you, sirs, than this, that, recognizing in this way that intelligence is given to every man, you may be of the same opinion as ourselves, and believe that Jesus is the Christ of God.”
Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho

“. . . not only our works, but also our thoughts, are open before God.”
Justin Martyr, First Apology of Justin Martyr

“For it is the property of those who expect to obtain mercy by prayer and sacrifices, to cease from and repent of their sins.”
Justin Martyr, Hortatory Address to the Greeks
