I was raised as one of five children from just outside Pittsburgh in a working-class steel mill town. Poor schools, violent neighborhood and alcoholic father made for more than one's share of challenges. But like many that came before and after, I made it out. My brothers weren't so fortunate at first. Both dropped out of high school, but managed to complete their doctorates in the summer of 2004 as well.
