Mathes grew up a feral child in the deserts of the American Southwest who loved to read library books and take photographs. In 2019-2020 he was awarded a PEN America Writing for Justice Fellowship. He has worked as a screenwriter with Rehabilitation Through the Arts, is a two-time recipient of the Norman Levan Grant, a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar alumnus, an award-winning author of four books, photographer, book critic, screenwriter, and librettist. Although Mathes still struggles with subject-verb agreement and where to put commas, he is working with The New Press on a book/memoir, ILL SERVED, about veterans, mental illness, and mass incarceration. He loves his two daughters very much.

T.S. Eliot
“I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.”
T.S. Eliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Other Poems

Apsley Cherry-Garrard
“It is really not desirable for men who do not believe that knowledge is of value for its own sake to take up this kind of life. The question constantly put to us in civilization was and still is: "What is the use? Is there gold? or Is there coal?" The commercial spirit of the present day can see no good in pure science: the English manufacturer is not interested in research which will not give him a financial return within one year: the city man sees in it only so much energy wasted on unproductive work: truly they are bound to the wheel of conventional life.”
Apsley Cherry-Garrard, The Worst Journey in the World

Denis Johnson
“Write naked. Write in exile. Write in blood.”
Denis Johnson
