Maher was born in Amarillo, Texas, where his father was stationed in the Air Force. Shortly afterwards the family moved to Lowell, Massachusetts, where Maher remained through childhood. Upon graduating from Dracut High School, he joined the United States Navy where he served in the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Ramsey. Upon discharge, Maher returned to Lowell. He attended Middlesex Community College and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where he obtained an undergraduate degree in American studies. He later completed a master's degree in Education with a concentration in English.

From 2004 through the present, Maher authored and edited seven books for publication. He has been translated and published in five countries. ...more

Hi Paul, Most of your books are about Kerouac, and he is a favorite author of mine, and an influence in my own writing, and I think discovering new things that lend insights into personalities and artistic works is important. However, after 2001 when the Kerouac archives opened up fully at the New York Public Library, it made possible even more research that could be done, and so time was spent there. The most important part of Kerouac's life to me was through the 1940s where h was searching for a voice and into the early 50s when he at last achieved what he was looking for and set about doing his job on earth. The truth is also that I have since moved on to other things and relish the rich diversity there is in reading other material. I wouldn't rule out more books on Kerouac, but I don't think it is likely for the moment.(less)
