For starters, yes, it takes many years of schooling and then hands-on experience. Yes, doctors work many hours under extreme pressure. They have cases that test their capabilities, moments of happiness, and moments that emotionally impact them. Doctors must love solving puzzles, be attentive, be team players, be sympathetic, retain vast knowledge of medical information, and more. But if you have a passion for helping others, can handle stress and emotional moments, and are willing to keep learning, you just might have found your future career.

So You Want To Be A Doctor, like the other career books, walks readers through a day in the life of a doctor. We see how lunches go uneaten, how the day doesn't stop when the doctor "clocks out" from a shift, and how a doctor's demeanor changes from patient to patient. Doctors will cherish the good days, understanding that there will be hard days, filled with losses and unfortunate news. They tend not only to their patients, but also to their families. But doctors do not bear this weight alone. So You Want To Be A Doctor shares other team members who work alongside the doctor to give the best care to every patient under their care: the nurses, specialists, technicians, lab workers, pharmacists, and social workers.

So You Want To Be A Doctor also points out that we are finally taking care of the people who take care of others. Maybe this was due to the coverage of healthcare workers during the COVID crisis, but I'm grateful for whatever prompted it and appreciate the writer included it in the book. I also loved the artwork, which spoke volumes to what doctors’ face: the good and the bad. As with the other books in the professional/career series, I loved the fun facts and the pages spotlighting a few famous doctors in history. Do you know what prompted the creation of the first stethoscope, or what it was used to hear in a patient's heart? Or how many medical schools rejected Elizabeth Blackwell's application to medical school? Can you name the approximate number of cells in a human body? These answers, plus a whole lot more, await your discovery. I recommend this book for teens who are considering becoming doctors. Since animals can't verbalize what ails them, vets use keen observation, years of medical knowledge, tests, and conversations with owners to piece together what may be causing the distressed animal's symptoms. SO YOU WANT TO BE A VETERINARIAN gives a wonderful overview of a day in a small vet office, showing that the day can be filled with many surprising moments, laughs, and tears. But small animal vets, who treat animals such as cats and dogs, are not the only vets out there. The writer covers large animals (e.g., farm animals), exotic animals (e.g., ferrets and even tarantulas), zoo animals, and wildlife. The writer spotlights how each team member at a clinic plays a vital role in supporting the vet and their clients, both human and animal. And like in human medicine, the book shows how you can specialize in a particular medical field, such as pathology (the study of disease), dermatology (skin), cardiology (heart), and more. Finley, a Northern leopard frog, is feeling sad because his small size limits his jumping height and swimming speed, leading to him being teased by other frogs in Croaksville. He wishes he could jump higher and swim faster than all the other frogs, and with a stroke of presumably good luck, his wishes are about to come true.

The wishing flower blooms once every ten years, and Finley was luckily close by when this beautiful, magical flower appeared. The wishing flower had only three petals, each representing a wish for the finder. Once the wish is made, the yellow petal turns purple, signifying that the wish has been granted. Finley knew what his first wish would be: He wanted to be strong, so he could hop higher and swim faster than any other frog. Then, they would have no reason to tease or laugh at him anymore. However, Finley quickly learned to be careful what you wish for because you might regret it. Suspenseful moments plague Finley, causing him to rethink his first wish, and offer readers a chance to weigh in on Finley’s impromptu second wish. Did he make the right choice? Would they, the reader, make the same one? Why or why not?

As for Finley’s third wish, another highly charged scene influences his decision, teaching readers that it is better to give than to receive, or (in other words) it is sometimes best to put the needs of others in front of your own. Finley became the hero of Croaksville, and, most importantly, he learned to accept himself as he is. Those are powerful lessons we should be teaching all our children!

There are a few challenging words for young readers, such as cacophony, so I recommend reading this story with an adult. I also recommend checking out the “All about Northern leopard frogs” pages. It shares interesting facts about the little creatures, such as their unique “calls” and the number of eggs they lay at a time.

Finley the Frog and the Magical Wishing Flower delivers powerful life lessons through suspenseful storytelling and brightly colored illustrations. It promotes positive self-image, empathy, and the importance of making good choices. Amazon’s suggested age group is 3-12. I would reduce that to 3-10. However, regarding the story’s positive message, love thyself, that is ageless.

The Mayo Clinic defines dyslexia as “a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).” Contrary to stigmas, individuals with dyslexia do not read backwards, and the condition doesn’t diminish their intelligence. A dyslexic person’s brain can confuse the correct order of letters in a word (writing) and become confused by two similar words (reading, e.g., “from” and “form”). This can be frustrating for the individual and affect their school or work life.

In Reading Shmeading Stinkin’ Reading: An empowering book about dyslexia, we step into Benji’s world. We witness how frustrating reading and writing are for him because the letters flip and flop, and sometimes he struggles to start a word. Though Benji struggles with reading and writing, his brain excels creatively. Where other kids need step-by-step instructions to complete a project, Benji’s supercharged brain examines the supplies and creates a mental path to the final product. (Fantastic illustrations showing his struggles and strengths.)

Benji’s teacher understood his condition and tailored this activity to fit his skills. It boosted his self-confidence, allowed him to show his leadership skills, and demonstrated how we all learn in different ways. There will undoubtedly be many children listening to this story who will relate to Benji. They will share his frustrations and (hopefully) speak up if reading, writing, or processing language is difficult for them. This story will also show kids that having dyslexia does not mean a person is not smart. It means educators and parents must find ways to help a child express or make sense of what they see.

I recommend reading Reading Shmeading Stinkin’ Reading: An empowering book about dyslexia with any child facing day-to-day challenges. Share Benji’s story with your students and let’s squash the misconception that a person with dyslexia has a lower intelligence, because they don’t! Also, see which five famous people with dyslexia the author featured in the book who have left a positive mark on history!
