One of those books that, as I read it, I kept thinking both about how much I loved it and how much it would be possible to hate it.

Some lyrical moments, although I’d argue that A Small Place is the stronger work.

An interesting memoir of a time of change, starting as a bit of the Innocent Abroad, as the author marries a Hungarian nobleman and moves to his estate, and ending as a memoir of the destruction of the old world by Germany in WWII.

What’s the word when you want to say that something’s anachronistic without the judgment that the word implies? A fine example of what we might call moral tales.
