Richard H. Pfau has a longstanding interest in human behavior. He has researched, compared, and helped change behavior on national scales and extensively written about ways to more accurately measure what people do.

He also has a longstanding dissatisfaction with the state of psychology. Having a strong hard science background from previous studies in engineering, upon graduating with honors and a B.A. in psychology, he felt that psychology was still "in the Middle Ages." This dissatisfaction led him to join the Peace Corps to experience behavior in a different culture--eventually resulting in seven years of life and work within the Kingdom of Nepal and eleven years in Africa. Also, the theories and models developed to explain why people do the things they do leave much to be desired -- most are simply descriptive rather than explanatory in a scientific sense, are based on abstract concepts, overgeneralize, account for only a small part of actual behavior around the world, and are untestable.
