Amber Hoyem writes literary historical fiction rooted in early American history. She is the author of Strawberry Moon.

A former secondary educator, her descent into genealogical research drew her into early American history. What began as curiosity became a years‑long search for emotional and historical truth—one that revealed her ancestral ties to John and Sarah Whipple and the archival traces that sparked Strawberry Moon.

Originally from Southern California, Amber now lives in Oklahoma with her husband, two sons, and their fluffy puppy, Brooke. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found at a BMX track, cheering on her youngest, who behaves as if gravity is someone else’s problem.

I had never heard of Merrymount, the Pequot War, the Antinomian Controversy, or the Massachusett people before beginning my research. Each discovery became an aha moment that reshaped the story. Laying out the timeline and then piecing together the archival record was unexpectedly thrilling—the connections were everywhere, and they kept propelling the narrative forward.(less)

The research was vast, but the story needed to stay close to the people living through it. Finding that balance took time, patience, and many rewrites.(less)

A Tender, Awkward Moment from Strawberry Moon

When a whispered confession turns into “stinky man,” you know the moment was going too well.

I love sharing small moments from Strawberry Moon that show the awkward, tender, very human side of early colonial life. This one has always made me smile — and wince — in equal measure.

John Whipple shows Sarah his new home, hoping she’ll admire the place and—ideally—him. She looks around the empty space an Read more of this blog post »
