Mark Huntley-James started writing in his teens - just because he likes stories, reading them, telling them, writing them...

He writes science-fiction, space opera, fantasy and any odd thing that appeals to him. Some of his short stories, and anecdotes about the animals on the farm, can be found on his blog.

He trained as a physicist and worked in R&D for a number of years before moving to commercial software development and now lives on a smallholding on the edge of Bodmin Moor with his partner, multiple cats, chickens, and a flock of rare-breed sheep.

In between all of that he learned to clog dance, spent weekends as a pikeman in 17th century battle re-enactments and kept bees for several years.

After I published "Hell of a Bite" I followed that with a space-opera "Streamrider" that I had been writing in the background, and since then I've finally got back into a four-part time-travelling space-opera series that I actually started writing at the same time as "Hell of a Deal".

Parts 1 and 2, "Queen of a Preloved Universe" and "Mistress of the Golden Empire" are in first-draft, the third book is about two-thirds to a draft and the fourth is still in my head. It's sufficiently complex that I don't intend to start publishing until all four books are fully drafted, so with fingers crossed and without the benefit of a time-machine, I hope to see the first one coming out somewhere early in 2022.

Hell Of A Deal (used to be Demonyka) was triggered by walking past a shop called Monica's and I wondered what they would sell if they were Demonica's. The sequel that I'm writing, The Road To Hell, was largely sparked by being reminded of a traffic safety advert I saw as a kid.
As for Hell Of A Bite - that was just a random grumble about something I saw on TV and just said 'no such thing as vampires'. Then I thought, that's a stupid thing to say and my current favourite character would say it, and regret it.(less)

Knee-Trembler

No two cats are the same, but an awful lot of them are very similar. Faced with an inward-opening door, most will press their nose against it and decline to back up. Our little ginger will indicate a food bowl needs topping up, but then is in such a hurry that only the first few biscuits make it into the bowl, with the rest bouncing off her ears. “Please remember, there is no such thing as safe sex with a demon.”
Mark Huntley-James, Hell of a Deal

“His only mistake, naturally enough, was to keep his attention on the bloke with the saw. He should have been watching the naked girls. Amazing how finely balanced that choice can be.”
Mark Huntley-James, Hell of a Deal
