The key takeaway to me was the importance of intact families and stable marriages for social mobility. I also liked the way Vance handled the mixture of culturally inherited traits and individual choices that led to the social ills he describes.

Edward Gibbon
“the vicissitudes of fortune, which spares neither man nor the proudest of his works, which buries empires and cities in a common grave.”
Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

Edward Gibbon
“Revenge is profitable, gratitude is expensive.”
Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

Winston S. Churchill
“If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed;
if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may
come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.”
Winston S. Churchill

Mikhail Bulgakov
“You're not Dostoevsky,' said the citizeness, who was getting muddled by Koroviev. Well, who knows, who knows,' he replied.
'Dostoevsky's dead,' said the citizeness, but somehow not very confidently.
'I protest!' Behemoth exclaimed hotly. 'Dostoevsky is immortal!”
Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita

J.R.R. Tolkien
“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers
