Hamish Williams lectures in Literary Studies, Latin, Greek, and Creative Writing. He writes fantasy stories for readers young and old alike. His fiction is a mixture of traditional fantasy (the hero's journey, dense world-building, interweaving storylines) with elements added from beast fable, satire, detective stories, and mystery. The first two volumes of his fantasy series, Tales from Basthinia, are The Southern Tide (2021) and Under the Green Cloud (2025). His academic writing analyses various themes in ancient and modern literature, such as utopianism, decline, hospitality, and the sublime. He is particularly interested in epic, fantasy literature, and modern rewritings of the Minoans. ...more

The King Must Die by Mary Renault

The King Must Die (1958) is structured as a typical bildungsroman, focusing on the physical, moral, and psychological growth of the Greek hero Theseus, and detailing his journey from a young lad in the small town of Troezen (on the east coast of the ...more

The Children of Húrin by J.R.R. Tolkien

Of all Tolkien's unfinished manuscripts, The Children of Hurin is the one I really wish he had completed (if only one had a DeLorean...). I recently taught this work at Signum University (which specialises in fantasy and Tolkien), and so this seems a ...more

Fiesta by Ernest Hemingway

I assume the somewhat low aggregated rating (of around 3.8) for The Sun Also Rises pertains to the rather sparse or Spartan plot -- nothing much happens in Hemingway's first great novel. This is typically modernist, stories where not much actually ha ...more

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again by J.R.R. Tolkien

The Hobbit is a quest, not to slay a dragon or to find hidden treasure, although these are important plot elements, but to reclaim a home, in the case of the dwarves, and to discover what it means to have a home, in the case of Bilbo. The story start ...more

I started writing a plot-based review for what is certainly my favourite fantasy book of all but very soon realised the complexity and futility of this task. The backstory to The Fellowship of the Ring would take a whole chapter to write -- in fact, ...more

The Schopenhauer Cure by Irvin D. Yalom
