This book questions our current definition of the electron, which after all is more than a hundred and twenty years old and (should) require moderation. Some of the questions asked are if the classical radius of the electron is 2.8 x 10^-15 m, how does such an electron absorb a photon that has a wave length of 500 nm. A 500 nm wavelength photon is blue-green light. A 500 nm wavelength photon would be 178 million times bigger than the electron. If this circumstance is explained by pointing out that the electron within the atom exists as an electron cloud (wave-function) and does not have a shape, it should be remembered that the area occupied by a 500 nm squared photon could accommodate 25 million atoms of 10^-10 m diameter. So it is a conceptual question that needs to be answered especially remembering that Einstein's explanation of the photo-electric effect is one photon to one electron. Also to be questioned is the frequency of photons. The working of the rubidium atomic clocks depend on the laser irradiated atoms resonating at the same frequency as the irradiation, this means that if the atoms are being irradiated by red light of 700 nm that the electrons are oscillating at 428 x 10^14 Hz and emitting photons at that rate. The present theory of the electron comes nowhere near explaining this phenomenon. Light is an important part of our lives, it is estimated that 85% of our input is visual, let's get a clearer understanding of what it is. (less)
