I've wanted to write fiction since my mid-20s. But I was always intimidated and felt breaking into fiction writing necessitated some kind of elaborate secret-ninja-plan. In the spring of 2016, I decided to just start writing and submitting. And I was very blessed to experience success early on. Now, I'm wondering where I would be if I had just started writing and submitting in my twenties.

So, my advice for anyone, whether you're 18 or 80, is don't be an "aspiring writer." Just write.(less)

For a more traditional answer, reading, music, and roleplaying games are good raw material for writing. Not, typically, directly ... but occasionally a passage, a turn of phrase, an image, or even a mood will trigger inspiration.(less)
