In the beginning of the book when Robert was explaining his ideas to Sophie about the code the narrative stats this after his conversation, "As someone who had spent his life exploring the hidden interconnectivity of disparate emblems and ideologies, Langdon viewed the world as a web of profoundly intertwined histories and events. The connections may be invisible, he often preached to his symbology classes at Harvard, but they are always there, buried just beneath the surface," (Brown 147). This quote helps readers understand that at that moment Robert was intelligent and readers knew he has an aptitude of solving codes. Also this quote helps readers throughout the book how the knowledge underneath the surface of Harvard symbolizing how the characters in the book know all the pieces to the code but how Langdon only figures out about the pieces to the code. Langdon expresses intelligence throughout the book, but towards the end of the book Langdon shows ignorance. When Langdon starts to explain his thoughts on the bible and his beliefs on Christianity he stats, “The Bible represents a fundamental guidepost for millions of people on the planet, in much the same way the Koran, Torah, and Pali Canon offer guidance to people of other religions. If you and I could dig up documentation that contradicted the holy stories of Islamic belief, Judaic belief, Buddhist belief, pagan belief, should we do that? Should we wave a flag and tell the Buddhists that the Buddha did not come from a lotus blossom? Or that Jesus was not born of a literal virgin birth? Those who truly understand their faiths understand the stories are metaphorical," (Brown 338). This quote shows readers the emotion Langdon is using by expressing ignorance to show the harsh truth to others. This helps readers understand how Langdon believes that people who have faith should be able to use it because they are not harming anybody. The way Langdon acts is admirable because during the story he shows his intelligence to get closer to solve the puzzle, but also he is ignorant to get the pieces to solve code. ...more "
