It becomes evident very quickly Cody's perspective on life, what Cody's dreams/aspirations are, and how he interacts with others. When Cody is about to leave County High School for the summer of his sophomore year, his football coach stops him and asks "Opened your report yet? Close shave son on those grades". (Abrahams 2). Within the first 5 pages of reading, you can see that Cody doesn't give a lick about school, but is very passionate about football, and that is evidently his main focus. Cody's report card showed multiple D's and a D minus, tenths of a point above an F. The other thing Cody cares about other than football is his girlfriend, Clea, however Clea is the best student in the school, taking all AP classes, and having excellent grades in all of her classes. When Cody comes out and gets in the car with Clea, she tells him that she got a B and Cody responds with "Wow! That's awesome, I'd never be able to pass calc". (Abrahams 5) However, Clea quickly shows how their relationship will not be successful much longer with foreshadowing with her response to his statement about her B "I've never had a B, you're my boyfriend, you should know this, I've always had all As". (Abrahams 5) This quickly shows how Cody is prone to miss details that are important to his girlfriend and that likely if he continues to miss details like these, their relationship will not be much longer. Cody is exemplified as an outstanding football player, but just doesn't really give much priority to school or paying attention to details with those people who he cares about, like Clea, which will prove fatal later on in the book. I would not call Clea admirable in this point of the book, due to her actions and how she treats her boyfriend, Cody. However, I think Cody is admirable for his display in how he cares about her towards the end of the book when she disappears and Cody goes halfway across the country to find Clea and make sure she is safe. ...more "
