I used to answer this question with "Ever hear of plumber's block? Me either," but I'd likr to amend that arrogant answer.

I sometimes need to let a story bubble. It's not writer's block. It's a valuable part of the process of getting a story out there. It's like cooking. You got to let the gumbo simmer so all the flavors marry up.

You can push through writer's block–and you shuld–but for some stories that's not the proper response to a natural pause of the story unfolding in the writer's mind.

Now, there's another thing about when the story crosses its arms and zips its lips and just stares at you and you're stuck there. It might mean you fucked up and zigged when you were clearly supposed to zag. Or maybe you let your story catch a case of bloat and the prose has gotten obese and unwieldy and your story knows it and is not going to move until you go back and rezag that shit and pop a hole in the plot and let out the air. Thank a Bookseller

This is on the last couple pages of my new book:

Thanks for turning over this book. I know you're busy, and I know you probably have like nine seconds to get up to cash wrap and buy this book (thanks, man) and I know it's a madhouse in here and I know you're also thinking about getting a magazine or maybe a latte and look, here's the thing: You know that kid that put this book in your hand?
