I was born in an army field hospital in Germany, educated by nuns in Rome, and came to America when I was young. I took up writing fiction professionally on New Year's Day, 1982, got my first paid publication two years later, and have been writing and getting published ever since. I'm at my best when I'm plotting theft, rape, murder and treason, be it taking place in China in the 19th Century, in Midtown Manhattan this morning or in a dome on Mars 300 years from now.
