This book is firmly in the running for the most overrated book of all time. I was originally not interested in it because the title made me think that maybe it was just a romance. Well so many people, just swarms of people who read this said it was t This book is firmly in the running for the most overrated book of all time. I was originally not interested in it because the title made me think that maybe it was just a romance. Well so many people, just swarms of people who read this said it was the prototype of elite sweeping westerns. The pinnacle of the genre. SO many people talked about the incredible cast of characters and the amazing character development In this sweeping epic. Well those people were wrong. They appear to be confusing length for character development. All the characters in this book are either arrogant, love sick, stupid or a combination of those. Every character is flat as hell and most have just one character trait that comes back and pretends to be an actual character. I am stunned that people are so in love with such shallow characters. Do they love the stoic guy who is committed to his duty, do they like the energetic young lad eager for acceptance, what about the roguish womanizer, the love sick top hand, the love sick whore, the love sick rancher woman, the love sick saloon owner, the love sick mule? Weak and generic characterization aside, this long western adventure novel is actually just a romance novel in a western setting. There are several times when the book threatens to have something interesting happen and does build some interesting conflicts, but then the writer is like nah, as the conflicts either get resolved in a fast and disinteresting disappointing fashion or not at all. They try to build up multiple characters, the asshole soldier who wants their horses, but that guy ends up doing nothing, instead everything is about these sad sack characters whining about who they are in love with. The pacing is atrocious. A bunch of small insignificant events that lead to nothing over and over again. Perhaps the two most annoying things for me is the one character who actually has the chance to be interesting, Janey, is done away with after a very short while, and then Blue Duck the evil adversary who kills the innocent, murders their friends and has been their antagonist for years… we hear about this guy we see his evil in action, the stage is set for revenge… and they never even see him after the halfway point of the book. He just drops off the map of the plot and that’s that. I sure am glad instead of a face off with the main antagonist or even with the guys who kill his best friend, we get the main character thinking about his son and whether he can talk to him about it or not for like 50 pages. Cool. Everyone is too busy being sad and apathetic about life to do anything interesting. Probably because they had to read this overly drawn out 1000 pages of people in the west being whiny bitches. It’s not badly written from a line to line standpoint but dear god does he miss the mark when it comes to any understanding of plot or tension or conflict, or climax or really anything other than people thinking whimsically about being sad and apathetic about life for a variety of reasons. One of the main character deaths happens off screen, another one is just stupid and the reason for this stupidity is really never explained at all. And also, the bastards ate the pigs. The pigs were some of the best characters and they just ate them in a throwaway line. Damn this guy does not know shit about plot development. The fact that this won the Pulitzer tells me all I need to know about how useless such awards are and the level of incompetence those who award them have. I need to stop listening to people who recommend books because it’s stuff like this, an overlong romance disguised as a western, that I end up stuck wasting my time reading. But hey at least the ending was really really really drawn out and went nowhere. A good microcosm of the entire novel. Long, boring and pointless. I bump it up slightly for its nihilistic themes which I appreciate. Overall, If you really love whiny characters and redundant love sick sub plots, oh yeah, and cattle standing around, then this is the book for you. 2 out of 5… Dog shit on the plains. ...more
