Andrew Thelander has worked as a civil servant, private lawyer, English teacher and in the macadamia and food industries. He has a Master of Arts in Professional Ethics and Governance. He won the 2002 Griffith Award for Academic Excellence. In the 2005 Todhunter Literary Awards, he won the John Joseph Jones Award for his short story "The Visit of Ariya Iddhi".
Of distant Swedish ancestry, he has a working knowledge of the Swedish language and has co-authored English texts for the Swedish school system.
On his mother's side, he is related to Aldous Huxley.
He is a keen birdwatcher and environmentalist. His other interests include Theravada Buddhism.
