Recently I published several essays and decided to send them for a fellowship. I sent them to a friend to do copy editing. I figured since they were published, she wouldn't have much to do. Wrong! She gave me marked up copies of the essays with the copy edits, plus several places where I could revise. When I was done editing/revising, the essays had a wonderful facelift and were much better than the previous draft. Yet if I thought "Eh, they were published already! I don't need someone else to look at them!" I would've missed out on a great opportunity to improve what I wrote.(less)
