Julia and 18 other people liked Paula's review of Sylvia's Lovers:
Sylvia's Lovers by Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell
"In spite of the racy title, this book has no sex in it whatever. It was written in a simpler age, when Lovers meant people who loved someone. So, if you're looking for salacious writing, you've come to the wrong place.

I've recently found an intere..." Read more of this review »

Julia and 1 other person liked Amelmag's review of The Grey Woman:
The Grey Woman by Elizabeth Gaskell
"I really enjoyed this. Suspenseful, creepy, with well-drawn characters, and a strong side-note of women saving women (even when they can't save themselves). Feels complete -- everything it should be -- despite its short length. "
Julia and 2 other people liked Tammy Frederici's review of The Grey Woman:
The Grey Woman by Elizabeth Gaskell
"Oh, the suspense! Listening to the audio book while driving down dark country roads may not have been the wisest move. My eyes kept darting back and forth looking for what?! Thriller of a short story."

Julia and 1 other person liked Water's review of A Dark Night's Work:
A Dark Night's Work by Elizabeth Gaskell
"This was a very nice tale about a young lady who is quite devoted to her father. She is practically blind to his faults. She falls in love with a rather cold hero. Before she can marry her lover, though, a terrible tragedy strikes her family. The..." Read more of this review »

Molly is a generous, good-hearted sweetheart. Step-sister Cynthia is a beautiful and engaging manipulator. Step-mother is a totally self-absorbed liar. Father should have done a bit more research before asking her to marry him.

The story itself was sort of interesting, but it being touted as a guide to self-improvement is insupportable.

Ridiculously repetitive. The main concept is a good one, but the book just stomps the life out of it and was full of expletives that make it even less classy.
