Swedish illustrator John Bauer (d. 1918)
An artist from Sweden who died (tragically young, in a ferry accident) in 1918, has many beautiful works on Wikimedia Commons.
Here’s one that makes me think of hobbits hiding from the dark riders, huddled beneath tree roots (although this conception of just a basic rider in profile on a dark horse I’m sure has appeared many times):
