Fortunately my life has not been exposed to the struggles you find in a good crime novel. Fortunately! I guess the main mystery in my life - which i tried to wrestle with in The Heart of Annie - is why some people crater in the face of life's hardships where others confront their issues and survive. How do you find that strength? How can you build that kind of resilience in yourself? How do you harness your inner strength--that's my daily mystery.(less)

Originally I thought I'd say a couple from one of the great love stories - Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett, Emma and Mr. Knightley. And while I do love their tete-a-tete and the spunk of Elizabeth and Emma, I really think my favorite fictional couple is Woodrow Call and Gus McCrae from Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. I'm sure a small part of that is because I grew up in South Texas, amongst longhorn cattle. But largely it is because they were perfectly crafted characters to ground the sweeping narrative of this book. They were polar opposites and played off each other in such a sweet way. And they checked each other's weaknesses and motivated the other to show strength. It this that friendship that is the driving arc of this grand, gorgeous novel, and one that in the end reveals true love and loyalty. (less)
