Scott E. Hendrix earned his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee in 2007, specializing in the history of science. Scott started teaching at Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin, upon graduation, and over the years has taught classes about world, medieval, and early modern history, as well as the history and philosophy of science. These thoughts have mirrored my own personal journey of understanding in many ways, because when I was young I thought there's a necessary conflict between religion and science and gravitated toward authors like Richard Dawkins. But a funny thing happened in grad school. The more I learned about the historical relationship between science and religion, the more I saw that these two ways of understanding have been complementary more often than in conflict. Furthermore, I came to see that the conflict thesis, as it's known, is rooted in cultural forces such as anti-immigration and anti-Catholic feelings in the 19th century. That was very interesting to me, which set me to digging even more. (less)

Tom Nichols’ The Death of Expertise is a missed opportunity.

In 2017 Tom Nichols, a professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College and Adjunct Professor at the Harvard Extension School, published The Death of Expertise with Oxford University Press. This book is a call to action, a warning that “everyone is drowning in data,” which is a problem because, as Nichols argues, citizens lack the capacity to separate good data from bad, to eva
