Gary Taylor began his journalism career after graduating in 1969 from the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism, where he won the Walter Williams Award as the outstanding writer in the class of ’69. Until December of 1971, Taylor worked for The Flint Journal as the courts and legal affairs reporter for that Michigan daily. He joined the staff of The Houston Post in 1971 and worked there until August of 1980 covering a wide range of police, crime and government stories that earned him recognition as the UPI Texas Enterprise Reporter of the year in 1978 and a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting.
