Sonja D. Jones grew up on First and V Street NW in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. She received a bachelor of arts degree in print journalism from the University of the District of Columbia. She has been a teacher for more than fifteen years, educating both middle and high school students.

Sonja woke up at two o'clock a.m. every weekday morning and wrote for at least two hours before going to her teaching job. It took her one year and two months to complete the writing, editing, and publishing of Wicked Washington. She was forty-two years old in April 2013 when Wicked Washington debuted. This is her first novel, and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.
