Things this book featured: everything I love.

This book was a RIDE! The first half weaves a compelling web of personal ambition and ruthless competition, featuring our MC, Eden, who is a disabled ballerina desperate to win a job as a soloist despite her physical limitations. The small cast of characters is comprised of other up-and-coming ballerinas competing for the same job, and a legendary ballerina who serves as mentor, instructor, and love interest. The character interactions had me hooked! With a deeply interior writing style (which I love), Eden was a character you root for immediately. Most of the competitors were mean girls, but I loved them too, even if I didn't like them, per se. The instructor/love interest is similarly compelling. She is arrogant and demanding [and redacted spoilers but when you read it you will also go insane. I LOVE what Gladwin did with this character]. What can I say? I have a soft spot for women being corrupted by their greed and ambition.

Speaking of corruption. The haunted house! We are given seeds of lurking horror almost immediately, and by the mid-point you know deep in your bones something is wrong, but it isn't until post-midpoint that the horror leaps off the page and grabs you by the throat (which is almost a relief at that point, because the tension caused by looming dread had skyrocketed my pulse!). I could not look away from the page for the entirety of the last 25% of this book. All the promise of horror is payed off with interest and, best of all, the themes of the book (the fine lines between desire/need/mania, the perils of competition, the necessity of self-belief) were the core of the climax.

I enjoyed the play of contrasts, as well. The characters appearances (elegant and feminine ballerinas, soft pretty girls) versus who they are at their core (ruthlessly committed athletes willing to do anything to succeed) gives such pleasing depth.

I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a gripping, character focused horror. ...more

The premise itself is captivating: a woman whose touch kills has been claimed as a saint by a religious order, her deadly kiss used to kill criminals. Bree has never known the touch of another living being -- until a woman she kisses to kill somehow survives. And the woman (Evangeline) is hot! And ends up being a vampire! And they go on an intimate quest through misty hills and craggy valleys where they fall in LOVE, only their relationship cannot be because of [redacted gutting reasons]. Except then they return to the abbey that held the main character hostage her entire youth and [redacted insane ending that left me gaping].

I don't know where to start gushing: over the lyrical, atmospheric prose, or the central sapphic relationship between Bree and Evangeline, which unfolds with such gentle care and wonder only to hit like a gut punch at the end. Both haunt me.

Lucy has an incredible talent for balancing lush prose with devastating succinctness, which leaves the reader totally absorbed in the world without ever having the urge to skim over decorative detail. She gives us immersive description like, "The woods beyond our hollow were quiet. Fog eddied in wispy currents around the roots of all the trees; mist pooled like soup. Here, ash was king: a blaze of orange in a sea of emerald pine. My feet crunched through fiery leaf litter, the branches above clinging to the last of their bounty before winter arrived to snatch it away."

Then, she follows it up with terse interiority that allows you to understand how traumatic Bree's inability to touch anything living is, yet how mundane the horror is to Bree: "I’d dozed off in a patch of sunlight near the chapter house and awoken to find one of the kittens had tucked itself into my dress as I slept. It was cold, and already stiff. I’d stopped feeding the cats after that." A less confident writer would labour over those moments, bludgeoning us over the head with Bree's isolation, but Lucy has the skill to let it unfold in drips, and she trusts us to grasp it (something I appreciate, as so many authors spoonfeed the readers with directives over how we should feel and when).

Throughout the story Lucy builds a slow, immersive tale of two traumatized woman who discover the strength they need to go on through each other. By the time I was 3/4 of the way through the book, I was already convinced Lucy was a talented writer and I was emotionally sore over Bree and Evangeline's trials and tribulations. Then, I got to the end and I realized Lucy is not just a writer. She is an Artist. The ending is so deftly done I can barely understand the skill required to craft it, which is saying something because I'm a writer myself. The seeds Lucy planted in act one bloom in the final act, and the narrative symmetry is more than just a fun call back: it illuminates the arcs Bree and Evangeline have undergone together and separately, and adds several final bouts of horror when you already thought Bree's life couldn't' be more tragic. I remain in awe.

Sacred Poisons is a must read for fans of lush gothic tales who want an ache with their romance and welcome some blood in their teeth. Do yourself a favour and read it. ...more
