Don Sainte-Johnn grew up chasing the sound of Top 40 radio — the fast talkers, the jingles, the echo, the magic.
He sharpened his craft across the country, learning the business at KYUM in Yuma, building momentum in San Diego, commanding the airwaves in St. Louis and Chicago, and eventually landing behind the microphone at legendary San Francisco stations like KFRC during radio’s Top 40-dominant years.
San Francisco’s Last Top 40 Disc Jockey is more than a radio memoir. It’s a backstage pass to an era when personality mattered, music ruled, and the DJ was part ringmaster, part storyteller, part friend in the dark.
Today, Don shares stories from inside the studio — the triumphs, the heartbreaks, the format flips, and the fading of an unforgetta

When Radio Was All The Way Live

When Radio Was Alive

There was a time when radio didn’t feel programmed.

It felt alive.

Before corporate playlists and voice tracking, before algorithms decided what you’d hear next, there was a human being in a studio — SONY headphones slightly crooked, finger hovering over a cart machine, adrenaline rising like the mercury in Sacramento in the summertime as the post hit.

In the Top 40-dominant years Read more of this blog post »

Review: #1.1 by Allen Dean Maiora
4/5 stars
#1.1 is a quietly unsettling debut that asks a deceptively simple question: what if an AI experienced its own existence as a human life, without knowing what it truly was?

# 1.1 by Allen Dean Maiora
"Allen Dean Maiora’s novel 1.1 is a thoughtful, often haunting meditation on artificial consciousness and what it does to the humans who build it. The author, Allen Dean Maiora, frames the story as a slow-burning collision between a nascent AI’s widen" Read more of this review »

“Radio wasn’t just a job — it was a front-row seat to culture, music, and a generation finding its voice. I was lucky enough to be behind the mic when it all mattered."

"Walking into KFRC meant stepping into radio history. That microphone carried more than music — it carried expectations, legacy, and the sound of San Francisco.”

“At KFRC, you didn’t just play records — you joined a radio institution. The building, the staff, the energy… you could feel the Bay Area listening.”
