The thing that inspired me to write it was a personal family legend, regarding my oldest know direct ancestor, who participated in the Varna Crusade of 1444. I just blended it with Bulgarian folklore and real urban legends, that some people truly believed, or still do (the underground tunnels, the ancient alien narrative and rituals). Furthermore, medieval Bulgaria, or the Balkans in general, are not known to the common readers, and I think it would be somewhat interesting to have a whole new world setting, not your typical ones.
