At the start I tried to make her the modern woman of the area. A police sergeant after many years on the beat and a couple of years of undercover operations. She likes the way Freeman talks to her and this gives her the reason to choose the move to Detective Inspector. The more I wrote about her, the more I got more comfortable with how she was going to be in the future. Now into my third book with this character and she has grown quite well, even if still a bit of a mystery to some.

They opened up scope to put confusion into the investigation. Having troubled characters also made it that little bit easier to hide who the culprit was. I suppose the twists came from a natural progression of the story and the area it was based on.

There are lots of characters that are there to give the essence of what people are like from this area. They do not last long in each chapter but are part of the foundation for building the storyline. I knew the ending of the story before I knew the See Full Answer

"Ungrateful Bastards is the kind of crime novel that leans into the slow, methodical side of detective work rather than relying on quick twists or flashy reveals. It builds its tension through uncertainty, fragmented clues, and the quiet persistence o" Read more of this review »
