Jalál C. Hockett is a 22-year U.S. Army veteran writing unflinching grimdark fantasy from Texas. Inspired by George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie, his Grey Deep series explores trauma, betrayal, and moral grayness in a drowned world with no heroes and no easy redemption.

Debut novel The Fracturing (Book One) is a 2026 SPFBO 11 entrant (Mark Lawrence’s Self-Published Fantasy Blog-Off).

Book 2 (The Waking) Update: May 1st. Lock It In.

So... about that April 1st release date.

Yeah. That was ambitious. And here’s the honest truth: Book 1 came out December 21st. April would have been just over three months. I tried to hit it—really tried—but I’m also working full-time, and the job that pays the bills has been kicking my ass lately (not to mention trying to knock out these two classes for my M.Ed).

This book is different. But I enjoyed it. The amount of research that must have went into it is amazing. I never thought I’d learn that much about spiders, while simultaneously enjoying a good read!
