More than a traditional travel memoir, it is a true story of friendship, illness, adventure and human connection, where the greatest discoveries often come from strangers choosing to say hello rather than famous landmarks.

Growing up with significant hearing loss taught D.J. Gifford to experience people differently. Unable to rely entirely on what he heard, he became increasingly aware of expressions, behaviour, pauses, gestures and the unspoken ways people communicate. That perspective became one of the defining qualities of his memoir writing, not because hearing loss became the story, but because it changed what he noticed about the world around him.

Recurring pancreatitis is also woven throughout Ricardo's journey, alongside rugby, travel, work and unexpected adventures, yet neither illness nor hearing difficulties were ever intended to define the memoir. They are simply part of the landscape of a life lived with curiosity.

It took D.J. Gifford more than twenty years to finally begin writing his first memoir. What eventually made it possible was not finding more time, but being given some. His partner offered to take over many of the things he felt guilty about not doing, creating the space he needed to sit down and write. That experience later inspired one of the ideas that has become part of D.J. Gifford's work as an author.

The current printed edition of No, I Won't Buy You a Drink! includes an Eight Guilt-Free Hours certificate inside every book. The certificate allows the person giving the book to promise time rather than simply a present by committing to help with everyday responsibilities that often prevent someone from sitting down to read. It can also be used as a promise to yourself, recognising that finding time to read is sometimes just as important as finding the right book.

What began as writing a memoir has expanded into a broader exploration of modern life. Through his articles and ongoing writing, D.J. Gifford explores authenticity, curiosity, social connection and the quiet habits that influence how people relate to one another. Ideas including Socialising Equality, Five Seasons in One Life and Eight Guilt-Free Hours emerged naturally from reflecting on the experiences behind his memoir rather than being imposed upon them.

A recurring question sits beneath much of D.J. Gifford's writing: how can people live in the most connected age in history while still feeling increasingly disconnected from one another?

D.J. Gifford believes extraordinary lives are rarely built from extraordinary moments alone. They are built from thousands of ordinary moments that most people walk straight past. His memoir simply stops long enough to notice them.
