More than a travel memoir, it explores what can happen when strangers still choose to say hello, when curiosity becomes a way of seeing the world, and when life’s greatest adventures are often found in ordinary moments rather than extraordinary destinations.

Hearing loss and recurring pancreatitis are part of Ricardo’s journey, but they were never meant to become the story. They are carried through the memoir much like another item in a traveller’s backpack, quietly shaping the journey without ever defining the traveller.

Through his memoir and ongoing articles, D.J. Gifford has become increasingly interested in the small social habits that bring people together - saying hello, curiosity, observation and the courage to be authentic in a world that often encourages people to hide behind careful packaging. His writing asks simple questions about modern life, not to provide perfect answers, but to encourage readers to look a little more closely at the world and the people around them.

He believes extraordinary lives are rarely built from extraordinary moments alone. They’re built from thousands of ordinary moments that most people walk straight past. He simply stopped long enough to notice them.

D.J.
