Seema Bakhtiyar has always been an ardent reader of romance and a devout Austen fan. Ever since fourth grade, her love for Austen has only grown with the years — a love that inspired her to keep reading and eventually pursue a career with words, giving form to the myriad ideas that fill her ever-active mind.
Professionally, she has been a professor of management for close to a decade, thanks to her MBA, and also an English and IELTS trainer, owing to her master’s degree in English Literature.
More than anything else, she loves to surround herself with good books, read them, and dream that one day, books with her own name on the cover will sit among them. She lives in a small town in India in a big Indian family and absolutely loves spending t

Austen’s Mansfield Park

#mansfieldpark has always been my least favourite #austen novel. Maybe because it doesn’t have a very happy storyline, if we compare it to her other works, especially #prideandprejudice and #Emma . And more so, if you read it as a teenager and that too after these previously mentioned ginormous works. It didn’t satisfy the teenager’s excitement for a “Darcy-like” story (if you know what I mean 😉 )

Georgette Heyer
“You are shameless!” he said angrily.
“Nonsense! You only say so because I drove your horses,” she answered. “Never mind! I will engage not to do so again.”
“I’ll take care of that!” he retorted. “Let me tell you, my dear Cousin, that I should be better pleased if you would refrain from meddling in the affairs of my family!”
“Now, that,” said Sophy, “I am very glad to know, because if ever I should desire to please you I shall know just how to set about it. I daresay I shan’t, but one likes to be prepared for any event, however unlikely.”
He turned his head to look at her, his eyes narrowed, and their expression was by no means pleasant. “Are you thinking of being so unwise as to cross swords with me?” he demanded. “I shan’t pretend to misunderstand you, Cousin, and I will leave you in no doubt of my own meaning! If you imagine that I will ever permit that puppy to marry my sister, you have yet something to learn of me!”
“Pooh!” said Sophy. “Mind your horses, Charles, and don’t talk fustian to me.”

“Well, sir, do you mean to remain there, commending my father’s taste in wine, or do you mean to accompany me to Ashtead?”
“Set off for Ashtead at this hour, when I have been traveling for two days?” said Sir Horace. “Now, do, my boy, have a little common sense! Why should I?”
“I imagine that your parental feeling, sir, must provide you with the answer! If it does not, so be it! I am leaving immediately!”
“What do you mean to do when you reach Lacy Manor?” asked Sir Horace, regarding him in some amusement.
“Wring Sophy’s neck!” said Mr. Rivenhall savagely.
“Well, you don’t need my help for that, my dear boy!” said Sir Horace, settling himself more comfortably in his chair.”
Georgette Heyer, The Grand Sophy

Elizabeth Gaskell
“I know you despise me; allow me to say, it is because you do not understand me.”
Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South

“I wish I could tell you how lonely I am. How cold and harsh it is here. Everywhere there is conflict and unkindness. I think God has forsaken this place. I believe I have seen hell and it's white, it's snow-white.”
Sandy Welch

Elizabeth Gaskell
“Margaret was not a ready lover, but where she loved she loved passionately, and with no small degree of jealousy.”
Elizabeth Gaskell, North and South

Joe Thank you for accepting my friend request, Seema. I'm enjoying your thoughtful and succinct reviews of a genre that I often need help with: British literature classics. I'm thrilled you're able to penetrate the 19th century so well and look forward to getting to know you through your books in 2016!
