My biography in books. Work in progress here- me as well as the biography.
First childhood books to make an impression and stay with me for life, Branestawm, the Three Mulla-Mulgars, A Wizard of Earthsea.
Teen book: Lord of the Rings. I remain one of those total snobs who regret the movies.
First books to interest me in society and politics, Brave New World and 1984. Or should that be the Time Machine? The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, Hard times, and Cwmardy all deserve a mention.
First poetry: Time Real and Imaginary, then from Coleridge to William Bake, despite school not because of it.
First book to set me learning Welsh, the Mabinogion (J. Gantz' translation, with 'The Four Queens' by David Jones on the cover). I can now read and write

A much darker work than the Hollywood movie, or even than the BBC series of 1960 and 1975. There is more crime and violence, and the Morgans' life is much more challenging and precarious.

There are some loose ends- Ceinwen's fate is left ambiguous, an

The central idea is that there exists a single fundamental story, an essential motif in mythology and in all "true" poetry;

TWO MEN CONTEND FOR THE LOVE OF A POWERFUL WOMAN.

The woman is the White Goddess of the title. The men are the demigods of Summe

Aztec Century by Christopher Evans

Well-written, exciting, intelligent science fiction, on a par with The Man in the High Castle.

The hi-tech Aztecs are very convincingly realized. Outwardly civilized and honorable, there are good and bad Aztecs, and their enemies- analogues of Britain

A 20th-Century man is taken forward in time to a matriarchal world of magic, poetry, and ecological balance. But the White Goddess herself has a reason for disrupting this flawed Utopia, which has a chilling dark side. Graves lets his imagination, ot ...more

“Dyn a helpo Elin,' meddwn, 'wyt ti'n meddwl fod hogan mor ffol a dangos bod hi'n hidio dim bod 'i chariad hi'n fflyrtio hefo rhywun arall? Dim peryg. Does gin ddynion ddim digon o sens i guddio'u heiddigedd, ac yn aml iawn pan fydd merch yn chwerthin mwya calonnog, dyna'r amsar y bydd 'i chalon hi agosa i dorri.’

‘Heaven help Elin,' I said, 'do you think a girl is so foolish as to show she cares that her cariad is flirting with someone else? No danger. It’s men that don't have enough sense to hide their jealousy, and it’s when a girl laughs loudest, that’s when her heart is about to break.”

“Ond hen foi go lew ydi Twm, Sioned,’ medda fo, ‘ac mae o wedi penderfynu peidio deud wrth neb am y grempog honno rhag ofn i’r llanciau ‘ma ddychryn, ac y byddi di’n hen ferch ar hyd dy oes.’ Ffasiwn lol, ynte, fel taswn i’n hidio mae hen ferch fydda i, ac mae’n ddigon tebyg mai felly bydd hi hefyd, achos dydw i ddim wedi gweld neb yn debyg i Bob eto.

‘A good-hearted boy is Tom, Sioned,’ said Bob, ‘and he decided to say nothing about your cooking lest he frighten all the boys your age, and lose you any hope of a husband, and have you die an old maid.’ Little did they know, but I was likely to die an old maid in any case, for I’d found no-one the measure of Bob.”

“Mi dw i wedi trio peidio deud dim byd cas, achos fydda i ddim yn licio brifo teimladau neb, ‘rhoswch gadwch imi orffan,’ achos mi oedd o’n mynd i siarad, ‘ond rhaid i mi ddeud wrthach chi, gin na ‘newch chi ddim cymyd be ddeudis i wrthach chi nithiwr, ‘mod i wedi’ch casau chi y tro cynta gwelis i chi… Dydw i ddim yn ‘i gyfri o’n beth neis i hogan ddeud wrth neb am y cynigion mae hi wedi gwrthod, mae rhywbath yn mean yno fo, ond os na ‘newch chi fynd i ffwrdd rwan, a pheidio byth a dwad yma eto i ‘mhlagio i, mi fydd rhaid i mi ddeud wrth ‘y nhad neu ‘mrawd, er mwyn i un ohonyn nhw ‘neud i chi sylweddoli ‘modi o ddifri. Ella y cewch chi ryw hogan yn rhywle, er mae’n ddigon amheus gini, na welith hi ddim yn objectionable ynoch chi, chwadl chitha, ond rhaid i mi ddeud ych bod chi’n hynod o objectionable yn ‘y ngolwg i.’

‘I’ve tried not to say anything nasty, because I don’t like to hurt anyone’s feelings, please let me finish,’ because now I was going to speak, ‘but I have to tell you, as I tried last night, I hated you the first time I saw you… I don’t think it’s nice for a girl to tell anyone about the offers she’s refused, there’s something mean in that, but if you don’t go away now, and never come here again to pester me, I’ll have to tell my father or brother, so that one of them will make you realize that I’m serious. Perhaps you’ll find some girl somewhere, although it’s doubtful enough, who doesn’t see anything objectionable in you, strange though that sounds as I say it, but I must say that you are extremely objectionable in my eyes.”
