Shane Parrish
“* An example of not clear thinking and making decisions based on feeling and appreciation
Arnold wanted everyone to think he was important. He tried to make people believe he was indispensable by living a very fancy life. For example, he had a huge, expensive wedding, bought a giant house, and wore a Rolex watch to show off his wealth. But this plan didn't work. Instead of liking him, people became jealous and angry. His friends didn't appreciate him; they resented him. Ultimately, Arnold felt like no one cared about him, and he felt betrayed by his friends and even his country. His problem was his ego. He wanted to look good instead of being good.
Another example is someone at work who doesn't try their best because they think no one will notice or care. Both Arnold and the worker are making a mistake. They're not thinking clearly. True value comes from doing good work, not from trying to impress others. If you focus on doing your best, you'll be appreciated for what you do, not for what you pretend to be”
