Everyone has at least one book in them. I truly believe that. I have several inside of me, and if time permits, I’ll share them with you.

For now, I can commit to one – The Equity of Love.

In 2016, I took a year off to finally chase that dream of writing a book. I had no idea how challenging it would be: how slow, how frustrating, and how solitary. But it was also wonderful and gave me a deep sense of personal fulfillment and enjoyment. By the end of that year, the book was unfinished, but I had to return to work (you know that life stuff: bills, mortgages…). It took me many more years to complete on the side while working relatively demanding jobs full time. So, it has been a long journey to get my writing into the world. At times, I am tempted to say that if I could write full time without this career thing getting in the way, I would be living the life I want. But that’s not really true. My career consumes much of my time, but the people I meet, the experiences I have had, and the places I have seen because of my work keep me exposed to new ideas, different personalities, and, ultimately, fresh people and events for the imagination to noodle on and think of more stories.

What is the Book Like?

Readers often want to know about comparative titles. What is this book like? Where does it sit on the shelf? What authors are similar?

To answer that question, perhaps it’s best to review my reading interests. For many years, I was absorbed with Charles Dickens. From Dombey and Son and Great Expectations to Our Mutual Friend and Little Dorrit, I love how Dickens creates a complex tale, often with multiple subplots that merge together into a unifying plot and theme. He delves into the nuances of his characters and explores small micro-dramas and incidences that help frame character motivations in the broader story. Social class, wealth, and the expectations and obligations of family feature prominently in his novels, often conspiring against lovers and friends.

I make no claim to be on par with the great Dickens, but I think it useful for prospective readers to know my touchstone and inspiration. My love for subplots, combined with multiple POVs, a passionate affair, and a dash of modern corporate drama means this book would sit somewhere between Freedom (Jonathan Franzen), The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), and The Nest (Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney).
