Born in Seattle, Atkinson grew up mostly in New York and various places in Europe attending some twenty-two schools before completing his secondary education in Ireland. Some years later he began his undergraduate work in mathematics at N.Y.U, where he was admitted to the Ph.D. program before becoming a naval officer for nearly six years. Thereafter he and his brother owned and operated a company that developed and/or built mid-rise apartment buildings in the New York area. His post-graduate education includes an M.F.A. in poetry and a Ph.D. in philosophy with a dissertation on the existential philosophy of Martin Heidegger.
