The idea came from the simple act of walking my dog. Full disclosure, the act was simple but the circumstances were anything but.

The foremost circumstance was a pandemic that had everyone in lockdown, or at least not going to work, school, et cetera.

I had been working on A Labyrinth of Memories for a couple of years and had sent a copy to a faithful reader for comments. I didn't want to start a new major project while I waited, so I challenged myself to do a rigorous Instagram campaign. Instagram is a challenge for writers because it's an image-based platform, and our work is word based, but I decided to break into the channel with slides of text.

I started with a story called "Simulacrum", which would turn out to be The Passion Engine, and found the exercise delightful. (Find out about this exercise in my newsletter at https://www.subscribepage.com/timekoc....) In the course of the exercise, the world fell apart: my youngest was suddenly doing a new form of homeschooling, my daughter's senior year of college was cut short and her graduation obliterated, and my oldest moved back home because there was no point in him sitting alone in a Dallas apartment when he could do his work just as well from an extra room in our old house.

Further disclosure: the world had not actually fallen apart for me, as I've always been a homebody and love having all my kids here with me.

Other people were less enthused by the circumstances, and, as I took the dog for walks around the neighborhood, I noticed a very odd behavior pattern: the people I met, whether walking their own dogs or their suddenly permanent-at-home youngsters or just walking themselves to get out of the apartment, would, in addition to maintaining social distance, oddly, strangely even, avoid eye contact. It was as if they felt the need to deny the presence of other people to feel safe.

After one such experience, with my intentions toward another installment of "Simulacrum", I told my son that I was thinking to doing a story about an epidemic spread by eye contact, and he heartily concurred that such a story should exist.(less)
