So far, this is my second favourite one, and the main reason is the very good representation of depression. Okay, first I want to say that Celaena choosing not to complete her task makes sense, but instead of rotting away, why not get a job and do something or find a way to Maeve yourself instead of waiting for a random hawk.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Rowan and Celaena: Okay here's a breakdown of everything. First, I wanna say that Rowan was absolutely terrible at the start and then became this great person. This entire book was meant to focus on character building but I didn't see much when it came to him. Like, one day he is beating the crap out of Celaena and then next he is coddling her and being nice. I get that it's probably because of something Emrys said to him but come on. The night before he was saying she is worthless and that he hates her and wants nothing to do with her, and the next day he is all "I get you. I see you. I am here for you." I feel like SJM needed to do a better job at getting us from point A to point B. Which btw, to make matters worse, we also got him point of view. So like, she could have easily shown us why and how he changed. Speaking of character development, I love how we see every step of how Celaena began embracing her identity as Aelin and wanting to make a difference. I think her breaking point was finding out what happened at the slave camps and I think that was a really well written move on the authors part. On another note, Celaena having like clinical depression was so good because it was written well. You can genuinely feel the grief and pain she has through the book itself.

Sorscha and Dorian: I LOVED THEIR RELATIONSHIP! It was so cute and pure and trusting. It was amazing and perfect and she understood all of him and accepted all of him. It reminded me of when Dorian told Chaol that he cannot pick and choose what parts of Dorian to accept. This played into that line as Sorscha accepted him fully. Also, her dying at the end...I'll never be okay.

Chaol and Aedion: Okay what icons. Like, ya, lead your own relalution. Ya, fight back. Ya, yell and spit on the king. Pop off you two fr. Also, on a real note, Aedion was such a sweetheart when it came to Aelin and his promises to her. I just know he will be like the best "older brother" to her. Also whoever asked him if he'll marry Aelin was weird af. Like please stop. And Aedion looked uncomfortable answering that but they pushed anyway. Drop it bro.

Final note: the entire gang pulling through at the battle in Mistward was amazing. But also like okay stop trying to stop Rowan from going to Aelin. Damn let him go get his girl. Also, I wanna know the tea Rowan and Lorcan have towards each other. Like why is he surprised to see him pull through? Also, I don't blame any of them for the whipping. They had no choice.

The only two reasons I enjoyed this book are Nehemia and how badass Celaena was in it. Her and Chaol's relationship was cute and sweet at times, but I have to admit, I did not think it was all that. I feel like SJM had written it in for us to think that Chaol is perfect for her, and he is everything she could ever want or need. But we all know that wasn't the case because she still held Sam in her heart (and she always will) and Droian (as a friend). I'm not going to lie, I think the only reason they dated was because of convenience. It made sense for the Captain of the Guard and King's Assassin to be together. However, I never felt the chemistry or spark between them while reading.

Can we lowkey talk about how bad of an assassin Celaena is? Like, she's a great warrior and a great fighter. She has impeccable aim. But she gets caught wayyyy too many times. You'd think she learned how to spy or smth, ya?

I genuinely feel like parts of this book were so irrelevant. It was only to further develop the plot, but to be honest, it could have been shortened and added to Throne of Glass. Like, the book didn't really have a plot. It just set the actual plot in motion.

Finally, I hated how Dorian and Celaena weren't talking throughout most of the book because, be fr, they were a power couple (as friends).

SPOILERS beyond this point:

I genuinely loved her friendship with Nehemia, and the fate she got was honestly terrible. Like, having to sacrifice yourself to get someone to finally jump into action is so crazy and so brave. I can't even believe she did that, and not just for Celaena but for the whole world. Nobody haunts the narrative the way she does. A lot of people say Sam haunts the story, but in reality, it is Nehemia. She is everywhere.

Also, there's so much foreshadowing to her being Fae. Chaol constantly said her actions (the way she moved, ran, and fought) were not human.

Finally, I don't blame Chaol for Nehemia's death as many do. However, I believe he should have just told Celaena from the beginning about the threat. However, I get why he didn't. But like also, he knew the type of man he was serving. How did he think this was going to end?

Also, I would like to add. I find it weird to read SJM write about a revolution and fighting back against a corrupt, genocidal government. ...more

Here's a quick breakdown of my favourite characters and their dynamics. Warning: some may be a spoiler.
- Okay, first I wanna say that Celaena ordering Dorian around and not having a care in the world that he is a prince is one of my favourite things. Like, yes, tell him off. Also, I loved their relationship. I did, however, feel like it wasn't all that romantic, and they were definitely better off as friends. They didn't really have that tension and heavy attraction. I think it's just two pretty people trying to figure out if they actually have a crush or if they're just friends.
- Nehemia and Celaena are by far my favourite friendship in the book. Like, yes, girlboss together. Yes, tell people what to do. Yes, be mean and gossip in another language. Also, I love how when Nehemia found out certain things about Celaena, she accepted her regardless.
- Okay, I forgot the guy's name, but that one friend she made in the challenges, and he was so nice to her and took her advice. Ya, they were cute as friends. I like him.
- Finally, her and Chaol. Honestly, idk. They kinda piss me off. Like, I get he's not gonna really trust her off the bat, but I feel like even after she proves herself time and time again, he still doesn't trust her.

Anyway, here are more thoughts. Cain can actually go rot in hell, that stupid son of a bitch. Also, Celaena being poisoned reallyyyyy pissed me off because wdym you can tell poisons apart, but then allowed this to happen. Like, come on, girl. And after such a great takedown of Grave. Which, btw can we talk about that? Because beating the shit out of him, then giving him a handkerchief, is sooooo funny to me. It's giving Elijah Mikaelson (iykyk).

Anyway, I think that's a wrap on all that. It was a really nice book and I enjoyed the competition. Btw, this is a great first book for an author. Like wdym she wrote this at 16? However, smth about SJM writing about genocide, war, and oppression doesn't sit right with me. Again, iykyk. ...more
