“She thought the shadow shifted on its own, slipping in and out of the darkness where it lived. Over the years, she imagined catching glimpses of the thing as it mimicked her movements. That part of her, familiar yet unknown, was reminiscent of a fading memory; a worn Polaroid lurking beyond the periphery of her senses. Sometimes, it brushed past her like an icy breeze, and she shivered from its ghostly touch, never knowing why it haunted her. The shadow seemed to have a tangible, lethal quality.
