WHORL is the color of the book's cover, it comes in silver packets, and most of the characters chew or smoke it. (Reminiscent of bath salts and K2 and salvia.) In botany, "whorl" is the structure of leaves radiating from a single point.

Djuna Barnes
“We are but skin about a wind, with muscles clenched against mortality. We sleep in a long reproachful dust against ourselves. We are full to the gorge with our own names for misery. Life, the pastures in which the night feeds and prunes the cud that nourishes us to despair. Life, the permission to know death. We were created that the earth might be made sensible of her inhuman taste; and love that the body might be so dear that even the earth should roar with it. Yes, we who are full to the gorge with misery should look well around, doubting everything seen, done, spoken, precisely because we have a word for it, and not its alchemy.”
Djuna Barnes, Nightwood

Leonid Andreyev
“I want to be the apostle of self destruction. I want my book to affect man’s reason, his emotions, his nerves, his whole animal nature. I should like my book to make people turn pale with horror as they read it, to affect them like a drug, like a terrifying dream, to drive them mad, to make them curse and hate me but still to read me and…to kill themselves.”
Leonid Andreyev

Jean Toomer
“Her Lips Are Copper Wire”

whisper of yellow globes
gleaming on lamp posts that sway
like bootleg licker drinkers in the fog

and let your breath be moist against me
like bright beads on yellow globes

telephone the power-house
that the main wires are insulate

(her words play up and down
dewy corridors of billboards)

then with your tongue remove the tape
and press your lips to mine
till they are incandescent”
Jean Toomer, Cane

Jean Toomer
“Men are apt to idolize or fear that which they cannot understand, especially if it be a woman.”
Jean Toomer, Cane

Emil M. Cioran
“True confessions are written with tears only. But my tears would drown the world, as my inner fire would reduce it to ashes.”
Emil Cioran, On the Heights of Despair
