How many schools did YOU attend?

One of the challenges that I faced early on when writing Smart Girl was keeping track of all of the schools that I attended between kindergarten and tenth grade. In total, it was 9. Sometimes I switched during the "off season," i.e., summer. A few times I switched in the middle of the school year.

Like most of us, I just put my head down and got through it, but I realized that I needed to lean int Read more of this blog post »

It was a rough start because the sound of the axe grinding was way too loud. Don't get me wrong: Harris deserves to not give any fucks but it doesn't make for great literature. But once I got past the first 1/4 or 1/3, things settled down. And like e ...more

Arrrrrgh. I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this one more because I adore Juliet's writing. She's one of my favorites. But this book left a lot to be desired. I'll start with the good: the interplay between Matt, Rory, and the Old Gang, especia ...more

“Being a nerd, which is to say going too far and caring too much about a subject, is the best way to make friends I know.”
Sarah Vowell, The Partly Cloudy Patriot

“The only answer to this, and it isn't an entire answer, said Father Travis, is that God made human beings free agents. We are able to choose good over evil, but the opposite too. And in order to protect our human freedom, God doesn't often, very often at least, intervene. God can't do that without taking away our moral freedom. Do you see?

No. But yeah.

The only thing that God can do, and does all of the time, is to draw good from any evil situation.”
Louise Erdrich, The Round House
