Over the course of researching and writing the book, I got married, moved, had two kids and took on much more responsibility at my real job. So finding time to write was always the biggest challenge: during the kids' naps on weekends, late at night after they'd gone to sleep, during mini-breaks on weekends when everyone else was out of the house for some reason. It wasn't so much a matter of inspiration, but just taking advantage of every potential moment to spend on the book. (less)

I interviewed him for a paper in my black history class, and later talked to him for a couple of student newspaper columns. But it was 17 years later when I was at my in-laws' house, standing in their kitchen, when my father-in-law suggested I write the book, knowing that I had a huge interest in Perry and was looking for a topic for my first book. “It meant that I and every other woman I knew had been living a lie, and all the doctors who treated us and the experts who studied us were perpetuating that lie, and our homes and schools and churches and politics and professions were built around that lie," she (Betty Friedan) wrote. "If women were really people -- no more, no less -- then all the things that kept them from being full people in our society would have to be changed. And women, once they broke through the feminine mystique and took themselves seriously as people, would see their place on a false pedestal, even their glorification as sexual objects, for the putdown it was.”
Andrew Maraniss, Inaugural Ballers: The True Story of the First US Women's Olympic Basketball Team

“It was the USSR, as an emerging basketball power in the 1950s, that first called on Olympic leaders to officially add women's basketball to the program as a medal sport, a half century after the Fort Shaw girls demonstrated the game in St. Louis. Their first attempt came during a June 1955 meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Paris, where the Soviets asked delegates to vote on the adding women's competitions in volleyball, basketball, speed skating, and rowing, all of which were already open to male athletes.”
