Jim, I'd really like to know the rubric you're using to grade these baby books, please. What was it about Little Owl you felt lacked literary merit?
Scientific inaccuracy! It talks about an owl being friend to all creatures of the night when, in fact, owls prey on creatures of the night! I'm all for cutesy kid's books, but I like knowledge and a message that are applicable to life. If a fairy tale has fantasy, that's fine. But a book about owls... I don't want overt scientific inaccuracies, unless those owls are delivering mail to wizards.
