Anthony Hi Jeremy,

My favorite book? "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. I couldn't imagine life without it.

Thanks for stopping by and all the best with "Vacation." I'll check it out.

Anthony

message 55: by Poppy

Poppy Thank YOU for the friendship, Jeremy :)

Of course I'll check out Vacation, hopefully I will find it here at foreign bookstores.

My all time favorite novel is The Lord of the Rings. I've always been fascinated by the world building and the details that I'm willing to spend years reading the History of Middle-earth and learning Sindarin.

Wishing you a wonderful day, too!

message 54: by Elle

Elle Mitchell Thank You for the honor of adding ME as your friend. Your book sounds wonderful and I added it to my TBR list.

My favorite novel... is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, well actually all of them but 1, 3, 5, and 7 are my favorites! What about you?

Have a gloriously wonderful day :)

Buffy

Massimiliano Mauriello Hi Jeremy,

my favorite novel of all times ?

Quite embarassing question !

I think I should better not have a definitive one (after all if I like too much a book I'm reading, that book may come the best of all, and so on for the next good one).... the list could be quite long, you know.

Anyway, if you really are so interested, I could say a title for all (without mentioning any other worth and deserving my praise) : "Zen and the art motorcycle maintenance" by Robert Pirsig.

Have you read it ? If yes, what's your rating about it ?

Please, let me know; maybe some other books you found particularly interesting.

Thanks for your message.

Finest regards

Angela hello to you! & thanks for the request--your book looks quite interesting.

as for the answer to your question [for which i am gracious for it permits me to be nosy and read the myriad answers of others], my favourite is flaubert's bouvard et pécuchet.

which is your favourite?

message 51: by Aimme

Aimme Thank you for your greeting..

In accordance to your question…. I am just an ordinary reader who read only in leisure time. Anyway, I almost all time find myself trapped in hustle and bustle and that makes my book list slowly grow. But I think I can name some of my favorites such as Hemmingway’s Old Man and the Sea and Da Vinci Codes. I hope I can be a good reader and perhaps also a writer like you.

Well, have a nice day!

message 50: by Hannah

Hannah Fields Well Jeremy that is a very hard question! I love books so much it is hard to pick a favorite. Hmm...I suppose I would have to say that my favorite book would have to be The Count of Monte Cristo, The Phantom of the Opera or Pride and Prejudice. What is yours?

Have a delightful day! ^_^

message 49: by Daniel

Daniel Jeremy, I've added your book Vacation to my to-read list.

My favorite novel was From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne.

message 48: by Ilja (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:18PM)

Ilja sounds great! let me know what you think of it after you're done..have been meaning to re-read it myself since it's been so long but there is just so much to read and so little time :)

hope your own book is going great..it seems quite interesting!

message 47: by Russell (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:18PM)

Russell Good question, Jeremy, about my favorite novel...I think I'd have to answer that in two parts...my favorite novel was probably Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. But the novel that blew me away more than any other was The Sound and the Fury. I just read it again a couple of years ago, and after writing several novels myself, this one took my breath away for the risks Faulkner took. He breaks every rule. And he makes it work. What about you?

message 46: by Sara (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:17PM)

Sara Hey Jeremy, I really don't have much a favorite book yet, but if i hav to say, i would say Twilight. It is an awesome book! Mainly bacause its a love story and its fantasy! Both my favorite genres. How about you? What's yours? Talk to you soon! Happy Life! ;D

message 45: by Hannah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:17PM)

Hannah Fields Hey Jeremy how are you?

message 44: by Kaza (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:17PM)

Kaza Sounds great! Keep in touch, okay?

message 43: by Sandra D (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:16PM)

Sandra D My favorite novel? Why, yours, of course!

No, I'm kidding. I haven't got hold of a copy yet, so I haven't read it. But I will!

Anyway, my first love is non-fiction, but I have read a few (thousand) novels over the years. Hmm, how to pick a favorite?

Well, I'm not much of a re-reader, because there are too many books I want to read and not enough time to get to them all. Plus I get bored reading a book all over again when I already know what story it's going to tell me.

The only exceptions I can think of are the first three books of the Hitchhiker series by Douglas Adams. I love their droll humor, and they've stood the test of time because I still enjoy reading them every bit as much as I did 25 years ago.

message 42: by Ilja (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:16PM)

Ilja hey Jeremy,

I'm here to contribute to your big study :) it's hard to pick a favorite novel, because books are so different and personal.. but i would say that "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was my first really heavy reading experience and the book that really open the door to the world of literature for me! hope this answer is satisfactory..take care Jeremy

Ilya

message 41: by Otis (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:16PM)

Otis Chandler Thanks Jeremy. My favorite novel of all time is a tough one - but I'd say its between Dune and The Lord of the Rings.

message 40: by Hossein (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:16PM)

Hossein Hi Jeremy :)

I’d be really happy for sharing. And thanks a lot for your nice wishes.
At first I should say that unfortunately I haven’t read many books up to now and I started reading seriously recently. And I have a big to-read list that many of them could be my favorite novels in future.

But in those few books that I’ve read, I love Christopher Frank’s “Mortelle”.
As I said first I should read more books ;)

Best Wishes @};-

message 39: by Renée (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:15PM)

Renée Heya! Are you collecting a list of people's favourite books or something ;)?

It's difficult to pick one, but I'd probably say Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther".

message 38: by Drea (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:15PM)

Drea Hi there Jeremy

I see this isn't a unique question. ;) Favorite novel of all time . . . Is it odd to say that I can't remember anymore? I have had many reading spells in many genres. In my young youth, horror and romance, then mystery, then the classics, then aliens, new age, astrology, art books, and now chinese nutrition, yoga, dharma, ayurveda. I have a tendency to eat books. If I like the topic I just need more and more information. I hope that is not insulting to you as an author .. . I just cannot pinpoint a writer. Books to me create inspiration...like Rumi for the soul . . the words just drift me off into another world. Shamanic traveling is also a new interest ;)

I liked your interview. I'll make sure to read more.
intelligently funny

message 37: by Bill (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:15PM)

Bill Jeremy,

I guess my _two_ favorites would have to be _Mumbo Jumbo_ and _Invisible Man_. Those were really the two novels that made me think I might one day be able to be an author--if that makes any sense at all.

message 36: by Kaza (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:15PM)

Kaza My favorite novel - the favorites change as fast as I read them. But a special one that always stands out is Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. (And reading some of your kooky stories up on your page, you're a wee bit like him!)
Now you have to read both my books in the Erec Rex series and tell me how much you love them.
Kaza

message 35: by Tarum (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:15PM)

Tarum If I have to pick among my favorite novels, I guess "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas is my favorite Novel of all time.

But you know what, Good story is not always written as a novel. An Indian Epic "Mahabaratha" that I read in a form of comic when I was a child is also my favorite.

message 34: by Noria (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Noria Depends on my mood. But the book I keep returning to, more than any other: "Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta."

I like short stories too. Kelly Link's Magic for Beginners is real magic.

message 33: by Hannah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Hannah Sanders For a long time it's been BRIEF INTERVIEWS WITH HIDEOUS MEN by David Foster Wallace (if that counts as a novel, as I suppose it's more like short stories.) I think I'm on the outs with it, though. Since I feel it slipping and since it's likely not even a novel, my current favorite novel might be PNIN by Nabokov.

Which novel do you despise most in this whole wide world?

message 32: by Ann (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Ann Hi Jeremy,

What a challenging question to answer. I love many books...but I guess I'd have to say Wallace Stegner's ANGLE OF REPOSE.

And how about yourself? What's your favorite novel?

Have a beautiful day!

Ann

message 31: by Abdyka (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

message 30: by Wendy (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Wendy Hi Jeremy :^)

I'm going to cheat here and name a trilogy. My favorite books of all time are the Greensky Trilogy by Zilpha Keatley Snyder. They made such a huge impression on me growing up. I recommend them to anyone I know who doesn't know about them. They were the first books I read that taught me to question everything I've been told.

My favorite genre is science fiction and fantasy. But I read all other sorts of novels.

And I have to say that frolicking phantom footstools sounds pretty fun! I wish you a wonderful day filled with the same :^D

Wendy

message 29: by Sheri (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Sheri Joseph Hi, Jeremy--It's hard to pick an absolute favorite of all time (and for all time), but I'm a big fan of MOBY DICK.

message 27: by Cheryl (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Cheryl Picking a favorite book is always difficult when you're an avid reader, but the one that I read that has stayed with me and that I have read many times is The Mists of Avalon. I enjoyed the whole fantasy realm--the eerie setting of the lake, the lovely and mystical descriptions, the heroic characters and exciting plot.

Pure escapism! I recommend The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley. 5 stars!

~Cheryl Kaye Tardif, bestselling author

message 26: by Stephanie (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:14PM)

Stephanie Tuell wow. that's a difficult question. i can't really think of one. the closest to my all time favorite would have to be "To Kill a Mocking Bird." other than that, i don't really have one favorite book.

message 25: by Evi (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:10PM)

Evi Mahasti Hey Jeremy !

Thanks for the message !. What a difficut answer of your question..;o) what's my favorite novels ? well, personally I dont have any yet so far but I love reading novels of Michael Crichton. And now am curious about your novel:-) I will definitely let you know once I read it.

In the meanwhile, have yourself a wonderful day.

Happttimes & Cheers,

message 24: by Tasha (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:08PM)

Tasha It's hard for me to choose just one book. :) But I can narrow it down to two: The Tao Of Pooh and She's Come Undone.

message 23: by J. (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM)

J. My favorite novel of all time? That's a hard one. I can think of several, but if I had to chose just one, I'd have to say Hyperion by Dan Simmons...literary science fiction at its best. It's sort of a Canterbury Tales in the 30th Century.

message 22: by Andrew (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM)

Andrew Hmmm, novels that I love- I remember crying after I read Flaubert's first novel "November" about a young aristocrat who falls in love with a hooker. But I was 18 when I read that. I really liked Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. I'm working on a novel right now, too, so I guess I love that one as well. I really like True Crime, like The Cuckcoo's Egg by Cliff Stole. I will see if the library where I work carries your novel, if not, I'll put in a buy request. My new book of poetry just came out, too.

Cheers!

-Andrew

message 21: by Jamia (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM)

Jamia oh yeah. and i absolutely LOVED "Carrie" i used to love scaring myself to sleep. your moderately haunted farmhouse reference made me think of that.

message 20: by Jamia (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:07PM)

Jamia hi jeremy!!! so hard! so hard! i love so many books and have different relationships with them...

i think of all time...
i keep coming back to a children's book--
"are you there God its me margaret" by judy blume.

i absolutely LOVED it. and still do.
judy blume showed me a world my friends and i could relate to even if it wasn't exactly like my own. her messages were so frank and so universal.

i also have to say William Faulkner's Absolom, Absolom was the first book I think I reallllllllllllly understood with an academic sense of theoretical understanding and savoir faire. and that empowered me so much...

and i think led me to be interested in many of the topics I am interested in today.

see i'm already wavering. so many books make me happy.
")

i also adore Danzy Senna's Caucasia.

message 19: by Aaron (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:03PM)

Aaron Jeremy—

Thanks for your good message. I love all of Murakami, but I am particularly drawn to Jay Rubin's translations. There is a translation of a Murakami story in Rubin's book "Haruki Murakami and The Music of Words" about the Girl From Ipanema that is my favorite. I also love the story "On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl." Novels... Wind-up Bird... Norwegian Wood.

message 18: by Katie (last edited Aug 25, 2016 02:02PM)

Katie Thank you for your friendship as well, Jeremy. To answer your question, my favorite novel is The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. If you don't mind me asking, what is yours?

I have yet to read any of your work but hope to in the near future. Have a wonderful upcoming weekend!

message 17: by Adriane (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:57PM)

Adriane This is a very hard question! My favorites vary by genre but I would have to say, awwwwwww I can't pick just one! For starters I'll list "Blood on the Leaves" by Jeff Stetson and anything by every other fabulous writer I've spent hours enjoying.

message 16: by Rebecca (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Rebecca That's easy. Mark Helprin's Winters Tale. :-)

message 15: by Crystal (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

 Crystal Hey Jeremy,

I'm in love with all her work, but my favorite Francesca Lia Block for now is "Necklace of Kisses."

Her most recent is "Psyche In A Dress," I think, and that was gorgeous too.

How about you?

message 14: by Jason (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Jason As a fellow UCR graduate I think I'm obliged to check out your book (eventually)!

Well I would say then that "Being Peace" by Thich Nhat Hahn is my favorite book. Not fiction, or even a story, I know, but it really deals with of the most fundamnetal questions of life and how to live and isn't that the point of so much literature?

message 13: by Drew (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Drew Kunz It Then : Danielle Collobert

message 12: by Allison (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Allison Can't say that I have just one favorite book. Ones that I truly love are To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Plainsong, and Ordinary People

message 11: by Rusty (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Rusty My favorite book at any given time changes. Here are the ones on my mind today: Big Bad Love by Larry Brown, Legends of the Fall by Jim Harrison, In the Country of Desire by Leslie Garrett.

message 10: by Kevin (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:56PM)

Kevin My favorite book of all time is probably Stories in the Worst Way by Gary Lutz. My favorite novel might just be Homeland by Sam Lipsyte or A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews. I know they're recent publications, but I like new stuff.

message 9: by J.R. (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:55PM)

J.R. Hello Jeremy,
I'd have a problem listing just one favorite writer. A few I keep going back to and re-reading include Thoreau's Walden, Melville's Moby Dick and Brontes' Wuthering Heights.
My reading is all over the charts, from mysteries to bios, fiction to non-fiction--anything that strikes my interest.
I did read and was impressed by the review of Vacation. Though I'm not much into fantasy, your book sounds like something I might put on my to-read list at some point (not right now--it's already too full)

message 8: by Aaron (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:55PM)

Aaron Jeremy-

I'll definitely try and give your book a peek when this summer comes around - the review sounds great.

You definitely show make the time to read The Stand. I've read it twice and have a real hankering to give it another round sometime in the near future.

Aaron

message 7: by Aberjhani (last edited Aug 25, 2016 01:55PM)

Aberjhani Hello Jeremy--
Thanks for sharing that extraordinary review of VACATION. They seriously do not come any better than that except when attached to some major award with some major cash prize:-) So big-time kudos to you on that score.

I can't claim an all-time favorite book. There are major works of fiction, obscure works of philosophy, single poems, and biographies that each have blessed my life with a gift of insight and resolution at extremely challenging and crucial moments. I can state very literally that any number of books have saved my life a number of times and I'm grateful to each as I am to the authors who penned them.

Peace,
Aberjhani
