"WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange was granted political asylum by Ecuador on Thursday, setting up a standoff with the British government, which has vowed to block his exit from the country. The announcement was made by the Ecuadorian foreign minister, Ricardo Patiño. He said that Ecuador was granting Assange political asylum because it believed he was being persecuted for his actions as the head of WikiLeaks." The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Mimi V (naomi_v) | 432 comments this will be an interesting situation to watch. even in England, PMs have warned that the government should not make a move against the embassy.

why is the UK so interested in sending Assange to Sweden? he hasn't been charged with a crime -- he's only wanted to questioning. he has said that he will go to Sweden if they publicly promise NOT to send him to the US or that he would be happy to submit to questioning by other means (i.e. video conference.) when Pinochet was arrested in London, they released him rather than extradite him.

obviously there's more to this than questioning Assange for alleged sexual misconduct.
