Visual Poet, Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou has made some of the most visually stunning films I've seen.

House of Flying Daggers (2004) is so beautiful to look at and so good to listen to that the story is almost beside the point, serving only to get us from one stunning scene to another.

Hero (2002) shows how the martial arts genre transcends action and violence and flows into poetry, philosophy and ballet.

it's good that house of flying daggers was so lovely to look at, because the story really fell apart in the last half of the film. it's worth your while to check it out, because as oi ling says, it's stunning....really stunning.

i also thought everything up to the last 15 minutes of hero was brilliant. but i do wish he'd work on figuring out how to end his films.
