Imagine my surprise when my book collection thinks I own a collection of African American Spirituals when I don't. Based on where it is in the list, I figure out that I was *trying* to scan The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. My google-fu tells me that the bar-coded ISBN really does belong to the book of Spirituals... The bar-coded ISBN--the one printed by the publisher--is wrong. The one printed inside the book is correct.
I wonder how many retailers this mystified.
Sorry, I couldn't think of a non-confusing way to explain this - but according to isbn.org these pairs of numbers should go together:
068146609X - http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...
9780681466098 - not on the site
1585670588 - not on the site
9781585670581 - http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...
publisher's page: http://www.overlookpress.com/p-g-wode...
The bolded items are the same in the database, currently.
Is there a standard way to fix this? I'm holding a copy that's labeled 1585670588 and I'm strongly tempted to just put that in the ISBN10 field for the existing edition (since it uses the ISBN13 number that should go with 1585670588).
But if the other edition actually exists (and it seems to?) then whatever I do will potentially put the wrong edition on the shelf for some users.
Help? Suggestions?
