Snail in Danger (Sid) Nicolaides (upsight) | 106 comments I just started reading this, and the ISBNs for two different editions appear to be confused. One edition is apparently not on the site.

Sorry, I couldn't think of a non-confusing way to explain this - but according to isbn.org these pairs of numbers should go together:

068146609X - http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...
9780681466098 - not on the site

1585670588 - not on the site
9781585670581 - http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53...
publisher's page: http://www.overlookpress.com/p-g-wode...

The bolded items are the same in the database, currently.

Is there a standard way to fix this? I'm holding a copy that's labeled 1585670588 and I'm strongly tempted to just put that in the ISBN10 field for the existing edition (since it uses the ISBN13 number that should go with 1585670588).

But if the other edition actually exists (and it seems to?) then whatever I do will potentially put the wrong edition on the shelf for some users.

Help? Suggestions?

Cait (tigercait) | 4988 comments Oh bother! Yes, that is a mess. In this case, since the book did originally have the 1585670588 ISBN-10 and since it currently has a cover known to match the 9781585670581 ISBN-13, I would say the 1585670588/9781585670581 pair should win as the ISBN most likely to correspond to what people meant to shelve. You could create a 068146609X/9780681466098 edition and combine it, to help people looking for the other ISBN-10. (The 1585670588 ISBN-10 is shown in the log as having been removed from that edition a year and a half ago by a librarian who is no longer active -- I wonder what the reason for that was?)

Cat | 2 comments I got a doozy for ya. I scanned in a book (love that feature!) with the ISBN-10: 0965044153 ISBN-13: 9780965044158

Imagine my surprise when my book collection thinks I own a collection of African American Spirituals when I don't. Based on where it is in the list, I figure out that I was *trying* to scan The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. My google-fu tells me that the bar-coded ISBN really does belong to the book of Spirituals... The bar-coded ISBN--the one printed by the publisher--is wrong. The one printed inside the book is correct.

I wonder how many retailers this mystified.
